Farm Bureau Financial Services, Paid Summer Employment, West Des Moines, IA

The Farm Bureau Financial Group, Inc. has two express claims temporary jobs open in at their West Des Moines Headquarters for summer 2011. The person will serve on the FBL Express Claims team and take initial catastrophe and claims reports by phone, working from a script of questions and completing the First Notice of Loss form. They are looking for employees who are agile and can handle many types of situations. Students with a customer service background are encouraged to apply. You should have good computer skills, good listening and communication skills, be adaptable to varying workload and pace, and be detail oriented. The person will be exposed to more complex claims situations and they may be taken on some claims calls or sit in on liability situations. The Express Claims department is considered a springboard to many other claims positions at FBL.

Apply for a CPCU scholarship

January 2009, the American Institute for Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters/Insurance Institute of America (Institutes) began offering 100 scholarships for the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation program. The President's CPCU Scholarship will cover the costs of CPCU textbooks, course guides, SMART Study Aids (which include flash cards, review notes, and online practice exams), and the national exam. this is an estimated value of $3,800 per scholarship.

The Vaughan Institute can nominate students for awards. If you would like to be considered, please contact Viana.

Note: According to Ty Leverty, the CPCU requires the completion of 8 courses: 4 Foundation Courses, 1 Elective, and 3 Concentration Courses.  He thinks that students who have taken Principles, Corporate and Financial Risk Management, and Property-Liability Insurance should have a relatively easy time taking and passing two of the Foundation Course exams: CPCU 500 (Foundations of Risk Management and Insurance) and CPCU 520 (Insurance Operations ). If the student is a finance major, they should be able to handle CPCU 540 (Finance and Accounting for Professionals) without a ton of extra work.
