Network with Young RMI Alumni
Industry Overview and Speed Networking.
Join the Young Alumni Board of the Vaughan Institute on Friday, September 6 at 3:00 in S401 PBB. They have an exciting and informative program planned that will include a speed mentoring event, a chance to learn about various entry level careers, and an opportunity to network with young alumni who recently entered the workforce. All RMI and GIS students are welcome. Contact Ali Rosenberg for more information and to register for this event.
RMI Student Resume Book
If you want your resume in the RMI resume book in time for the Career Fair, send Viana an electronic copy by September 11. The resume book will be emailed to nearly 250 RMI industry partners by September 16. Your resume may be included at any time during the semester; however, most employers will access the resume book before the September Career Fair.
You must sign a waiver to be included in the resume book. If you didn't sign a waiver at the golf outing, blank waivers are posted under the light next to the Institute's offices S230 PBB.
Also, don't forget to update your resume on HireAHawk. All RMI employers are asked to work with the Pomerantz Career Center and you could miss out on an important announcement or interview if you don't take advantage of the services offered by the Career Center. Be certain to include inform at on about your summer internships and jobs and include the RMI certificate where you list your college major.
Request an Industry Mentor
The Vaughan Institute, Gamma Iota Sigma and The Greater Quad Cities RIMS Society are cosponsors of the Industry Mentoring Program. Over the course of the year, you will get to know an industry leader on a one-to-one basis who works in a field that interests you.
This is a minor time commitment for an incredible benefit. You'll spend about 2-3 hours a month with your mentor and attend three group outings throughout the year. A $1000 scholarship will be given to one of the juniors in the program and mentoring students will be given the first opportunity to participate in a day of mentoring in Des Moines and possibly a day of mentoring in Chicago.
the first event is the Kick-off and all RMI and GIS students are invited. Mentoring students will be required to attend. Assistant Professor Terry Boles will provide a program on negotiations on October 19.
Contact Viana Rockel or Ali Rosenberg for more information. For an application form, contact Viana.
Tippie Road Map
10:30-11:20, C231 PBB
Learn about the Tippie Roadmap and begin to create your own map to success. The keyword to the Tippie Roadmap is skills. In this interactive presentation, we'll cover the skills employers want, start to identify the skills you have, and look for ways to strengthen and/or develop skills. the skills will be tailored to those that the RMI Industry requests. After completing your Tippie Roadmap, you will be prepared to articulate your skills to employers.
Many RMI Employers will be attending the Career Fair. Please introduce yourself as a Risk Management and Insurance Certificate student when talking with employers at the Career Fair.
Also, don't limit yourself to insurance and benefit companies. Every company needs financial employees who understand risk and insurance. If a company has an internship program in their finance department, the RMI Certificate is a way to distinguish yourself from others who are seeking Finance or Accounting Internships.
In addition to insurance companies and brokers like Transamerica, The Principal, Berkshire Hathaway Homestate, IMT, EMC, Nationwide, Holmes Murphy, Sentry, Cottingham & Butler, Sentry Insurance, and CNA (to name a few), our students have taken internships and jobs with such diverse companies as FactSet Research Group, Cerner, McGladrey, Great America Leasing, HNI Corporation, John Deere, Kohler, and Pepsico. New RMI partners/contacts include Rockwell Collins and UnitedHealth Group.
Please check out the career websites of all of these companies and learn a little about their operations before approaching them at the Career Fair.
