Cedar Rapids Professional Trip
Closed
Thanks to all who registered for the Cedar Rapids professional trip. We are at maximum enrollment, but there is a wait list in case someone drops out. Those who are attending will receive a message in the next few days requesting questions for the companies.

Resume Book and Spring Job and Internship Fair
The RMI Resume Book was emailed to over 250 industry professionals on Feb. 11 in advance of the Career Fair. If you are in the resume book, please be certain that your phone message is professional and that you answer your phone in a professional manner. Expect companies to contact you directly by phone or email if they are interested in your resume. Don't forget to prepare yourself for the Career Fair by researching each company you plan to visit. It is a great idea to have at least one insightful question for each company that will show that you have done your homework.

Career Series and Resources for International Students
On March 13, the Career Center will hold a session for international students on interviewing from 5:30 - 7:00 pm. in 1117 University Capitol Center. RSVP...

In addition, you may want to read the book that is in the Career Center Library: Power Ties: The International Student's Guide to Finding a Job in the US, by Dan Beaudry. Finally, the website Going Global
lists companies that hire international students.

HireAHawk--Your Key to Success
Many students don't realize the importance of a membership in HireAHawk. In addition to on-campus contact with regional and national employers, you can do a search for national job postings, schedule an interview or mock interview, get tips and assistance with resumes and cover letters, and connect with alumni. Most of the Vaughan Institute's industry partners list internships and jobs on HireAHawk and set up interviews through this system. The HireAHawk system has changed. 2013-14 Scholarships--many do not require FAFSA

RMI and Tippie College Scholarships
We have a limited number of scholarships for students who are completing the RMI Certificate. None of the RMI Scholarships are based on need, and all RMI students who are US citizens are encouraged to apply. The scholarships range from $1,000 to $2,500 and are sponsored by various organizations, including Principal Financial, Greater Quad Cities RIMS, and the Independent Insurance Agents of Iowa.

To be considered for RMI Scholarships and other Tippie College scholarships, apply online by February 28. Read the questions carefully and mark each place where it asks if you are an RMI student. Only students who indicate they are completing the RMI certificate will be considered for RMI scholarships, which range from $1,000 to $2,500 per year. Your application also makes you eligible for other Tippie College scholarships.

Industry Scholarships
Please remember that the Institute has a student resource center. You can work on resumes and cover letters and fax scholarship applications, resumes and cover letters from the resource center.

Motorists Mutual Scholarship--$2,000 Due March 10.
Advisory Board Member, Susan Haack, will recommend a student for a Motorists Mutual Scholarship offered through the Griffith Foundation. If you intend to apply for this scholarship, send Viana your resume and she will forward it to Susan. Then submit an online application.

Actuarial Scholarships
Undergraduate students studying actuarial science can apply for scholarships through the Actuarial Foundation. The scholarship is for up to $7,500 for academic year 2013-14. Learn more....

Harry House Captive Insurance Scholarship
The International Center for Captive Insurance Education (ICCIE) is pleased to announce the Harry House Scholarship -- an award of one full scholarship per year for course work leading to an Associate in Captive Insurance (ACI) designation. The Harry House Scholarship is sponsored by Housing Authority Insurance (HAI) Group of Cheshire, Connecticut.

The scholarship is reserved for a minority student who will be chosen based on scholastic excellence and good standing in the university community. The recipient will be permitted to attend all required courses, in person or on-line, free of charge as long as he/she passes each course. Forms to apply for the scholarship are available on the ICCIE web site at http://www.iccie.org.

Scholarships for Children of Iowa Agents--Apps. Due March 1
College students who are children of agents whose employer is a member of the Independent Insurance Agents of Iowa are eligible to apply for one of seven $1,000 IIAI scholarships. Applications must be postmarked no later than March 1. You must be the son or daughter of an active agent to apply. TrueNorth Companies, Cedar Rapids, IA, Internships
TrueNorth Companies will offer two internships summer 2013--a Risk Management Internship and a Transportation Internship. The positions should be posted on their website within a week, but you have advance notice through the links above.

Nationwide Internships, Des Moines and Ohio
Nationwide recently listed internship openings in Operations Management, IT Business Risk, Underwriting, Marketing, Actuary, and Finance. Search their website for intern to get a listing of the openings and visit them at the Career Fair. The company doesn't consider applications who require a visa or sponsorship.

Sentry Insurance, Business
Business Specialist Leadership Development Program

Sentry Insurance has a Leadership Development program for recent graduates. You must have a GPA or 3.5 or better and be graduating Spring 2013. Only graduates eligible to work in the US may apply.

The company will also be at the Career Fair and they will conduct Mock Interviews on Feb. 26. Sign up through HireAHawk for a mock interview.

The Principal, Internships in Des Moines, IA
The Principal recently listed several internships in their Des Moines Office. Many require a summer and a semester. They have openings for an accounting co-op, Investment Operations Interns, an Investment Management Intern, and a Sales Intern. EMC Insurance, Des Moines, IA, Internships
EMC Insurance in Des Moines has internships available in accounting, actuary, home office claims, marketing, risk improvement, and underwriting in their Des Moines office. In addition, they have several other locations throughout the US. Check their careers website for more details and the internship application form.

Transamerica, Cedar Rapids, IA, Internships
Transamerica recently listed several internships on their careers website. They have positions in portfolio risk, applied research, business technology, operational services, corporate planning, operational risk, agent support and actuary. Ameriprise Financial, Minneapolis

Intermediaries & Reinsurance Underwriters Association (IRU)
2013 Summer Intern Program

Application deadline has been extended for UI RMI students
The IRU summer internship program is a unique opportunity to intern with some of the world's top reinsurance companies. This is a paid internship at a minimum weekly rate of $450 and all housing and travel expenses are covered. Applications are normally due by Feb. 1., but the deadline for the UI's RMI students has been extended by a few weeks. To be eligible, you must have a 3.0 GPA. If you decide to apply, please let Viana know and she will make certain your application is flagged at IRU.

IRU provides customized in-house development and training programs to the reinsurance Industry. Their internship program provides juniors and seniors with practical experience in reinsurance operations. Each intern spends eight weeks in the summer at the home office of a company sponsor, such as AXIS Re, Signet Star Re, Towers Perrin Reinsurance.

Risk and Insurance Management Society
Join as a student member RIMS for free and connect with local risk managers and brokers. Check out the Greater Quad Cities RIMS Chapter.

Young Agents Conference--Free Registration

The Insurance Agents of Iowa offers free registration to RMI students who want to attend the Young Agents Conference. This is an exceptional learning and networking opportunity. To receive the free registration, contact Viana and after you register and she will inform the IIAI that your registration is free. Students are responsible for their own travel and lodging.

American Association of Managing General Agents
(Excess and Surplus Lines)
University East Education Event, March 14-15

The annual AAMGA University East Education event will be held March 14-15, 2013 at the Georgia State University Buckhead Executive Center in Atlanta, Georgia. There are many opportunities for students to attend courses on both industry-specific and leadership topics while interacting with leaders of our industry. There will be two networking receptions, one on Wednesday evening and one on Thursday evening, where students are welcome to attend and make connections. For each student who attends any portion of the event, AAMG will connect him/her with a member who they can “shadow” in order to make additional connections to other members.

Registration fee is waived for students and professors. Daily snacks and lunch are provided free of charge, so for the cost of travel and hotel expense, students have the opportunity to meet and network with many potential employers in the Excess and Surplus Lines Industry. If this is too far to travel, they also have a similar event in Scottsdale, Arizona in the fall. Checking out full registration details at: http://www.aamga.org/node/3711. To register, simply complete the “Student Registration Form.” Although professors are invited, the Institute is not aware of any UI professors who plan to attend. Meeting Schedule Set
Hold these dates for spring GIS meetings. All meeting will be in S107 PBB and some speakers will be announced later. All meetings begin at 5:00 p.m. For more information, contact Aaron Hoefle. Most meetings will feature a speaker from the industry. Business casual dress is required.

The Alpha Kappa Chapter will hose the 10th Annual "Extreme Risk Takers" NAPSLO Symposium (Excess and Surplus Lines). Most, if not all, expenses for up to 14 students will be covered by a gift from Dana Ramundt. Last year over 100 students attended. Deadline for Registering is February 20th. Aaron Hoefle will be coordinating rooms and registrations for University of Iowa GIS Students. Contact Aaron if you want to attend.

Become a GIS Member
Many of the Institute's industry partners like to hire GIS members as interns and recent graduates. Don't miss out on this important opportunity to improve your resume and learn more about the industry.

New Membership Dues and Forms: All new members should bring dues to a spring meeting, if you haven't already paid. Also, members who haven't filled out the new membership forms should contact Aaron Hoefle as soon as possible.

Recruitment: Recruitment is an ongoing process at GIS and our best tool has been word of mouth. Let your friends know who we are and what we’re about as a student organization.
