The program will be provided by Amy Bodkin from the Chicago Office of Lockton Companies.May 3 General Meeting with Kevin Keller
Employment and Internships
TrueNorth Companies, Cedar Rapids, IA
TrueNorth Companies will offer internships summer 2009. They have several good candidates from students who attended the networking event this spring, but they are willing to accept additional applications. To apply, please send a letter of inquiry and your resume by email to Dru Berschig-Bridges. All internships are paid and will begin shortly after the end of the semester.
Krist Insurance, West Des Moines, IA
James Krist, President and CEO of Krist Insurance will be on campus the afternoon of Wednesday, April 15. The company has expertise in many areas, including risk management for medical practitioners. They are currently looking for 3 staff positions and for interns in insurance marketing and sales. If you are interested in meeting Mr. Kris to explore options at his agency, please email Viana and indicate the times you are available after 1:30 p.m. on April 15.
Risk Strategies, Northfield, IL
Risk Strategies is a national brokerages firm offering services to both privately held and publicly traded commercial clients. They provide high level, consultative support on insurance, risk management, human capital and executive liability matters. The company is offering an internship this summer for 10-12 weeks in their home office in Northfield, IL. Apply today. For more information, contact Andy Royce.
Corporate and Association Events
IIAI Young Agents Conference May 6-7
The IIAI has an impressive list of speakers for this conference, including Insurance Commissioner Susan Voss and CEO Richard Keith of IMT. There is a cost for this conference, but if we get enough students to agree to attend, Viana will try to negotiate a reduced rate for students. This is a good chance to network with young insurance professionals in the state.
RIMS Meeting April 8
The first two students to make a reservation will receive their meal free. The topic for this month's meeting is "Change in Medicare and Medicare Set Asides", presented by Jane Klein and Kevin Lanphier. The cost is normally $30 for guests.
Dana Ramundt Foundation Golf Outing
This golf outing raises funds for scholarships, but more importantly, students gain valuable contacts with many companies and insurance professionals. If you're a continuing student, you should attend to make contacts within the industry. Graduating seniors, please consider attending as a participant. For more information, contact Dana Ramundt, The Dana Company.
IIAI License School
The Independent Insurance Agents of Iowa hold review sessions for state licensure exams across the state. If you want to make your resume stand out, you might want to consider getting licensed. The IIAI will provide study materials to RMI students after they verify your enrollment. For more information on dates and topics, check out the IIAI website.
Vaughan Business Cards for Risk Management and Insurance Students
Business cards have been developed for students completing the Certificate in Risk Management and Insurance. The business cards carry the Vaughan logo and are personalized for each student. Students who receive a scholarship to a conference may request business cards. Other students attending professional conferences or industry meetings may receive business cards if they are seniors, have a GPA of 3.2 or better, and are in good standing in all of their risk management and insurance courses. Contact Viana for more information.
Risk management and insurance students, please consider joining the Vaughan Institute's LinkedIn group. This new group promises to be a great resource for alumni and students. For example, a graduate recently posted a job announcement in Cedar Rapids on our site. It will be a great place to learn of job openings from alumni and graduates, keep in touch with friends, and stay connected to the Institute. Just search for Vaughan in the groups section of the LinkedIn site, or contact Viana for an invitation. You may want to create a non-UI email to use on this site, as the uiowa.edu email will not be available to you once you graduate.
Note to Graduating Seniors
The advisory board has asked us to track employment records of all of our graduates. If you have found a job or are still looking, please email Viana with an update on your current situation.
Also, if you would like to receive periodic newsletters and updates, please provide us with your non-uiowa email, permanent address and cell phone before you graduate. Someday, we may have reunions or you may want contacts to return to Iowa. There are many ways we might be able to assist you in the future, so please keep us informed.
