Risk and Insurance Management Society Meeting

  • Students are invited to attend the Greater Quad Cities Risk and Insurance Management meeting normally held the second Wednesday of every month. Dinner is free for the first two students to register. November's topic is Work Comp Experience Mod Forecasting, presented by Holmes Murphy and Associates. Viana is attending the November meeting and will provide transportation to the first two students who contact her. After November 1, check their website for details on the location.     I Day, Iowa Chapter of CPCU

    I-Day is proclaimed each year to recognize persons who have completed Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter designation. This is a good chance to get to know many professionals working in the field. The topic this year is Legislation and speakers include: someone from the Governor's office, Senator Rich Olive, Chief Justice Marsha Ternus, IIAI CEO Bob Skow, and NAMIC CEO Chuck Chamness. Cost is $60 for Seminar and luncheon, or $38 for just the seminar. Register today by contacting Viana for a registration form or by emailing If there is enough interest in this event, we can make it an official University trip for up to five RMI students and Viana will drive.

    Gamma Iota Sigma is constantly seeking new members. Students who are interested in becoming members in the Insurance, Risk Management, and Actuarial Science Collegiate Fraternity are encouraged to fill out an application.     Mr. Agnew is the outgoing CEO of Grinnell Mutual, a mutual reinsurance company that is celebrating its centennial anniversary this year. (6:00 p.m. in C121 PBB)

    Liberty Mutual Summer Internships

    Liberty Mutual has summer underwriting internships available in Des Moines (requisition #09144), Warrenville, IL (req. # 09145) and Waukesha, WI (req. # 09143). Interested students should review the opportunities on their website. The internships pay $15-$18 per hour for 37.50 hours a week for 10 weeks beginning in late May or Early June.     NAPSLO Internship Applications Due December 1

    The National Association of Professional and Surplus Lines is accepting internship applications. The NAPSLO Internship Program began in 1981 to interest students in the Surplus Lines Industry. This is a very unique and exciting internship that is worth considering! Any RMI student who successfully complete the NAPSLO internship can compete for an additional 3 week internship in London or Bermuda. Viana can help you prepare your application, if you decide to apply.

    Arthur J. Gallagher, West Des Moines, Internship 2010 and 2011

    Arthur J. Gallagher has an exceptional internship program for students interested in a career as a producer. Their program presents hands-on learning experiences in a supportive, mentoring environment with a realistic look at an insurance brokering career. It pays $4,000 for the summer, and they recruit in the fall.

    In August, we announced that Kent Rosenberg was interested in interviewing candidates for a positions in West Des Moines and Sioux City for the summers of 2010 and 2011. Contact Kent directly if you are interested, or apply for AIG internships in other locations. Many employees are hired for their EDGE program through the internship program, including their current CEO, Pat Gallagher. Starting salaries can be as much as $58,000.
