Vaughan Institute Announcements
Two New Electives Added to the Risk Management and Insurance CertificateStudents completing the RMI Certificate now have two additional electives to choose from when designing their program. Finance majors may now count 06F:119 Wealth Management toward one of the required three non-insurance electives. All majors may take 06K: 170 Advanced Computer Analysis to fulfill one of the three non-insurance electives.

RMI Student Resume Book: Deadline Sept. 15, 2010
Update your resume on HireaHawk.com by Sept. 1, 2010, if you want to be listed in the RMI Resume Book in time for the Career Fair. After updating your resume, please complete the release formand slide it under the Institute's door at S230 PBB. This is a joint project with Gamma Iota Sigma and all students are also encouraged to join GIS. All RMI students who haven't accepted an internship or who are seeking employment are encouraged to participate in the resume book.
Request an Industry Mentor-Applications Due Sept. 10, 2010 for New Students and August 27 for Returning Mentees
The Greater Quad Cities RIMS Chapter, Gamma Iota Sigma, and the Vaughan Institute is launching the third Industry Mentoring Program. If you are completing the RMI Certificate, you are eligible to participate in this highly successful program. Simply complete an application form and waiver and turn them into Viana no later than September 10. Check out our website to learn more about the program and the calendar of events. Returning mentees should have their applications to Viana by August 27.
Students will have the opportunity to network and learn more about the industry by designing mentoring activities tailored to their interests. Students will be interviewed and, if chosen, they will be matched with a mentor chosen by the steering committee.

Matt Baker, an RMI student and GIS President, was chosen to participate in the 2nd annual class of Leadership Iowa University sponsored by the Iowa Association of Business and Industry. Only two students were chosen from The University of Iowa, and we were proud to have Matt representing the Institute.
Des Moines Networking Trip, Friday, October 22, 20107:45 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Registration required. Seating is limited.
The Vaughan Institute is sponsoring a networking trip to Des Moines on October 22. We'll visit the Independent Insurance Agents of Iowa, the Iowa Bankers Association, and the Association of Business and Industry. Seating is limited.
Contact Viana today and reserve your place. Sign the waiver and return it to S230 PBB. Please slide it under the door if no one is in. We'll meet at the south doors of the Pomerantz Career Center at 7:45 a.m. and return to Iowa City between 6 and 6:30 p.m.

If you are considering joining GIS, you may want to attend one of these informational meetings. You'll learn more about the many activities of GIS, including the Student Resume Book and the Mentoring program, which are also cosponsored by the Vaughan Institute. This is an exceptional organization for networking and learning about the risk management and insurance industries.

Patricia began serving her second non-consecutive term as president of the Cedar Valley Chapter of the CPCU Society in May of 2011. She has served on the board of Cedar Valley Chapter as education chair for over ten years. She is also an instructor for the CPCU Society Center for Leadership.

Mike Schuler has 30 years experience working for each of the top three global underwriters of Trade Credit and Political Risk protection. Prior to arriving at Wells Fargo Insurance Services in August of 2007 Mike was the Northeast Regional Vice President for Trade and Credit Insurance, based in New York City. Mike has also been a Sales Vice President in the Euler Hermes Cleveland office and a Managing General Agent for Coface, Upper Midwest. Mike is one of a handful of people in North America to have worked for the three leaders in Trade Credit Insurance. He has in-depth knowledge of underwriting, policy management, client service protocol and claims handling.

Mr. Dorweiler resides in West Des Moines. He is an Executive Vice President at Lockton Risk Services and does a lot of work for Lockton Affinity. He was a commercial P/C producer for many years and has held various leadership roles at multiple brokerages, including CEO of Seabury& Smith and President of Kirke Van Orsdel, Inc.

The University of Iowa Foundation, the Community Foundation of Johnson County and several other sponsors are providing a free seminar for estate and tax planning. If you think you want to become a financial advisor, you may attend this seminar. It will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at US Bank on Washington Street. Network with professionals in the property and casualty industry during the November 11 Insurance Day sponsored by the Iowa Chapter of the CPCU society. More details will be available in a few weeks. An individual donor has offered to pay the registration fee for students interested in attending. Speakers this year will include: Kim Austen, President, Allied Insurance; Steve Crawford, COO, Grinnell Mutual Insurance Company; and Bruce Kelley, CEO of EMC Insurance Company. Attending professional conferences is an ideal way to meet future employers. Another opportunity for student interested in the property and casualty industry is the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters (CPCU) annual conference that includes a student seminar on Sunday, September 26.
Risk and Employee Benefits ConferenceWheeling, IL September 21-22, 2010
The Chicago Chapter of the Risk and Insurance Management Society will sponsor up to 10 students to attend the Risk and Employee Benefits Expo in Wheeling, IL. We must apply for funding and conference organizers must know the names of students attending immediately. If you are interested, please contact Viana. If you commit and we receive funding, we will expect you to attend. You will need to charge the cost to your credit card and then be reimbursed by the grant. You will be assigned a mentor during the conference.

The Risk and Insurance Management Society brings together professional risk managers in all industries, associate members who provide services (such as brokers, lawyers, consultants, account executives) and educational institutions that teach risk management in a forum that discusses current issues. Vaughan Institute RMI students are eligible for free membership in the national society and the Greater Quad Cities RIMS Chapter will also waive chapter dues.
