Winners Announced at the 2019 Iowa Graduate Business Analytics Case Competition 

April 16, 2019 - Iowa City, Iowa

On April 12th, the Tippie College of Business hosted its fourth annual Business Analytics Case Competition with some of the brightest graduate students in the country coming to Iowa City to solve a real-world business problem.

This year’s case was provided by UnityPoint Health, a West Des Moines-based health care system. Sixteen teams, each comprised of four students, traveled to Iowa City to present their analysis and recommendations to a panel of industry judges.

“It is a great honor to host this competition with so many bright students and respected universities competing,” said David Deyak, Assistant Dean, Iowa Full-time MBA and Specialized Masters Programs.  The field included teams from: The University of Alabama; California Polytechnic State University; Oklahoma State University; University of Cincinnati; University of Minnesota; George Mason University; Missouri State University; UNC-Greensboro; Iowa State University; Carnegie Mellon; Fordham University; UC-Irvine; The University of Maryland; University of Illinois; Wake Forest University; and the University of Iowa.

“Our case competition would not have been possible without the generous support of UnityPoint Health and our expert judges,” said Kris Arens, Professional Director of the Master of Science in Business Analytics program. In addition to UnityPoint Health, analytical leaders from John Deere, United Airlines, Principal Financial, State Farm, Aarete Consulting, and Phillips served as competition judges to assess the teams. Additional sponsorship was also provided by RNL, Aegon Transamerica, Kum and Go, Interstates, and the Tippie Analytics Cooperative.       

One of the highlights of the event was the awards presentation.  As part of the 20th anniversary of the naming of the Tippie College of Business, Henry Tippie was on-hand to present the awards to our winning teams. “Without a doubt, the presence of Henry Tippie during the awards ceremony was exciting for everyone and made this event even more special for all in attendance,” said Mackenzie DeRoo, Associate Director, Corporate Development of Iowa’s graduate business programs.

Winners Announced at the 2018 Iowa MBA Business Analytics Case Competition

April 26, 2018 - Iowa City, Iowa

On April 20th the Tippie College of Business hosted its 3rd annual Iowa MBA Business Analytics Case Competition with some of the brightest graduate business and analytics students in the country coming to Iowa City to solve a real-world business problem.

The competition this year was sponsored by United Airlines. “United Airlines is a brand that is globally recognized and having our student teams work on this case and interact with our invited judges is one of our highlights each spring.  It is a great privilege and honor for our program to host such a prestigious event,” said Kris Arens, Business Director, Business Analytics Academy, Iowa MBA Program.  In addition to United Airlines’ key contribution, both UnityPoint Health and Kum & Go provided sponsorship for the competition. Also participating as judges were analytical leaders from John Deere, Google, and Source Allies.      

With interest from nearly 25 schools this year, Iowa hosted fifteen business schools from across the country to compete in the competition. 

In preparation for the case competition, students were given sample data from 6 different datasets which included information such as customer survey data, flight and aircraft data and member profile data.  They were asked to use their business analytics skills to not only create models but help United understand what drives customer satisfaction from the time customers arrive at the airport to the time they land safely on the ground and collect their luggage.

Teams were then asked to prioritize the findings and create actionable investments and recommendations to improve customer satisfaction.  Finally, they were asked to provide solutions for how to continuously monitor customer satisfaction. 

“This is competition is now in our third year and we continue to be excited with the quality of teams participating, our faculty engagement, and our support from sponsors, judges, and the analytics community. These student teams benefit directly from the assembled experts and experience shared throughout the competition,” said Michael Geneser, associate director of Iowa’s MBA program.

Dates announced for the third-annual Iowa MBA Business Analytics Case Competition

Organizers Iowa MBA Business Analytics Case Competition today announced that the third annual event will be held in Iowa City, Iowa on April 19–20, 2018.  Registration is expected to open shortly.

On April 20 and 21, 2017, the Tippie College of Business hosted its annual Business Analytics Case Competition with some of the brightest graduate business and analytics students in the country coming to Iowa City to solve a real-world. business problem.

The competition this year presented a case or business problem that was sponsored by 3M. "It is a great privilege and honor for our student teams to work on this complex real-world problem from such an internationally respected organization like 3M," said David Deyak, Assistant Dean of the Iowa MBA Program. John Deere, UnityPoint Health, Kum & Go, Pella and the Minnesota Vikings also provided sponsorship for the competition as well as their organizations analytical leaders to assess the teams.

"It is a great honor to host this competition with so many prestigious universities competing," said David Frasier, Associate Dean, Iowa MBA Programs.

As business schools continue to expand their offerings in business analytics this competition provides a great opportunity for schools from throughout the United States to meet, network, and demonstrate their acumen in this field during a competition.

"This is our second year hosting this competition. We are excited with the results of this event as it provided a unique opportunity for all participants - students, faculty, sponsors, judges and the larger analytics community - to benefit from the collective wisdom and experience shared throughout the competition," said Michael Geneser, Associate Director of Iowa's MBA Program.

The fifteen competing teams, made up of four team members each, had to go through two rounds of presentations. Students were asked to analyze data from a 3M business group that is attributed to one of thirty different divisions. The desired outcome was to create a tool that would better inform leadership and drive decision-making.
