My research has covered issues including the psychological contributions to the gender wage gap and the ways in which gender norms and stereotypes affect how men and women negotiate and react to the conflict between their work and family lives. I am interested in how gender intersects with other important characteristics like socioeconomic class, race, disability, appearance, and sexual orientation to predict workplace and relationship outcomes and how workplace policies, norms, and expectations facilitate or inhibit these effects.

I study issues related to gender and career success using a person-environment fit approach. That is, I examine both individual characteristics of women and men, such as goals, values, and interests, and the cultural norms, policies, and practices in the work environment to determine how these two sides of a coin jointly affect gender equality in the workplace. I am particularly interested in organizational strategies in recruiting, selection, and other human resource management functions that help attract and retain women in STEM fields and increase women’s representation in leadership positions.

I am interested in how gender stereotypes and gender-role expectations influence the business outcomes and experiences of women in business—female entrepreneurs, team members, leaders, and subordinates. My past research has examined the relative business survival of male versus female-owned businesses in different industrial and geographic contexts, perceptions of the entrepreneurial acumen of female entrepreneurs in mixed-gender entrepreneurial spaces, and the conditions under which female team members receive more benevolent treatment than their male counterparts. I am currently examining how and if leader gender influences the relative effectiveness of specific leader behaviors and the interactive effects of gender and negotiation tactics in immersive online environments.
