We're looking for an experienced web developer and creative thinker with a passion for higher education to join the Tippie College of Business Collegiate Marketing Team. In this role you'll support and develop current and future websites that lead in accessibility, UX, performance, and SEO while achieving the marketing and communications goals of the college. In addition, you’ll maintain strong ties with Stead Technology Services Group (STSG) and develop, foster, and maintain relationships with the greater University of Iowa web development community.

As a college we are invested in Drupal and need a web developer who is eager to support our current and future Drupal deployments. While current Drupal expertise is desired, you do not need to be a Drupal developer to be considered for this position. Solid experience in professional web development, a passion for working on the web, and a commitment to learning Drupal can work for the right candidate.

We understand that our future success on the web involves understanding, identifying, and exploiting opportunities to deliver leading-edge performance and user experiences that may require CMS-agnostic thinking. This includes developing for voice-optimized experiences, fast and responsive mobile experiences, utilizing cloud services for hosting and content delivery, evaluating the use of statically generated sites, building progressive web apps and experiences with service workers, integrating third party data via GraphQL, REST APIs, and web sockets, and decoupling Drupal or exploring headless options.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Design, deploy, maintain, and evolve websites and web-based applications for the Tippie College of Business and associated units
  • Consult with users regarding application requirements, identify needs, and verify scope of projects
  • Drive innovation and digital enablement across college websites and properties
  • Drive brand reputation, support our users, and enhance our ability to communicate effectively
  • Participate in the development of custom web applications including interaction with SQL databases, writing custom SQL queries
  • Champion accessibility in all our work
  • Actively contribute to UI, UX, and PX strategies across our ecosystem of properties, tools, and apps
  • Balance technical debt against the need for clean design and rapid iteration
  • Integrate (or maintain integration of) web properties with a martech stack consisting of marketing automation, CRM, and other point solutions deployed across the college and university
Support and Maintenance
  • Develop and maintain existing systems architectures, custom Drupal modules, and solve problems via The Drupal Way
Project Management
  • Collaborate, pair, and mentor with various members of the college to concept, scope, and develop projects
  • Document processes, solutions, and guidelines for users and colleagues
  • Actively collaborate, share, mentor, and contribute back to the team, college, and community by participating in the university development community
  • Comfortable with sprint-based work and working transparently

Education Required

  • Bachelors in a related field or equivalent combination of education and related experience 

Required Qualifications

  • Typically 3+ years of current professional web development experience in higher ed, healthcare, B2B, or B2C industries
  • Current professional experience developing and maintaining Drupal websites, or equivalent non-Drupal experience with a willingness and aptitude to learn Drupal in order to support and evolve existing investments
  • Experience integrating content from third-party systems to Drupal (or other CMSes, websites, and platforms) via APIs and data feeds
  • Current relevant experience (typically 1-3 years) with HTML, CSS, Javascript, jQuery, PHP, and MySQL
  • Effective oral and written communication with content providers, designers and developers, non-technical stakeholders, and end users
  • Demonstrated ability to interact positively with a diverse population
  • Attention to detail

Desired Qualifications

  • Typically, 1-3 years of experience with Drupal theming and backend development
  • Experience working with Drupal's key contributed modules and developing your own modules
  • Familiarity with implementing modern frontend experiences using tools such as SASS, Gulp, and JavaScript Frameworks (Vue, Angular, React)
  • Experience developing with Bootstrap (or other grid framework)
  • Experience with Git workflow, continuous deployment, and development best practices
  • Experience working with CMSes other than Drupal, including Wordpress, headless CMSes and modern frameworks
  • Experience building responsive websites
  • Experience developing websites to WCAG 2.x and WAI-ARIA standards
  • Current experience with modern UX, Interaction, and Usability standards
  • Awareness of SEO, what it is, why it’s important, and how to implement SEO improvements and best practices
