The Iowa Commission of Latino Affairs and the Iowa Department of Human Rights announced Gabriela Rivera, associate director of diversity, equity, and inclusion at the Tippie College of Business, will be inducted into the Iowa Latino Hall of Fame.

The Iowa Latino Hall of Fame was established in 2017 by the Iowa Commission of Latino Affairs to recognize, celebrate, and honor Latino leaders in our community. This year’s ceremony will be livestreamed from the Des Moines Art Center on October 17, 2020.

“This honor and recognition reflect my love and commitment to the advancement and wellbeing of my Latinx community. I am excited to celebrate with other honorees who represent an impactful group of individuals in the state of Iowa. I am grateful to my nominators for believing I am deserving of this award,” Rivera said in a statement.

Rivera, who is originally from Mexico City, Mexico, has long demonstrated a passion for supporting students through advising, mentorship, and advocacy.

She first started working at the University of Iowa in 1999. Among other positions, she has been a multicultural specialist in the Center for Diversity and Enrichment and Iowa Edge program director at the university level. She came to Tippie in 2016 as a student advisor in the college’s undergraduate program. She co-directs the Tippie Gateway Program, which recruits population under-represented in business including first-generation, women, LGTBQ+, and students of color. She also created the BizEdge Mentoring Program to provide continued support to under-represented business students.
