Our 2009 UI Department of Accounting Outstanding Alumnus of the Year, Gregory C. Ellison Sr., passed away on March 5, 2018, at the age of 67. Ellison began his career in Atlanta, first with KPMG and then at Banks, Finley, White & Co., one of the largest minority-owned certified public accountant firms in the United States, where he enjoyed a 40-year career including resident partner of the Atlanta office. In 1975, Ellison became a founding member of the Atlanta chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants. He was also appointed by the governor to the Georgia State Board of Accountancy in 1984 where he served for over nine years.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Ellison had a profound impact on the UI Department of Accounting. Ellison gave generously of his time and advice to the university as a member of the Professional Accounting Council. During his time of service, Ellison was fundamental in helping the department attract diverse students to our accounting program including establishing a collaborative relationship between Morehouse College and the department, which continues today.
