Richard Peter, Associate Professor of Finance, received the Tippie College’s Collegiate Teaching Award for tenure-track faculty at the college’s annual faculty/staff recognition event. The Collegiate Teaching Award recognizes excellence in teaching and each of the college’s six academic departments nominates a faculty member for the award. A committee of former Collegiate Teaching Award winners selected Richard Peter for this honor.

Peter, who also holds the TriStar Fellowship and the Cannon Teaching Scholarship for Teaching Excellence, was recognized not only for the value of his teaching but for his passion and innovations that he brings to his teaching and for his extraordinary ability to inspire students. As stated by Professor Thomas Berry-Stoelzle, “Richard is an outstanding teacher and the backbone of the Risk Management and Insurance Certificate program.”

The award committee was particularly impressed with the award winner’s redesign of a course to allow it to meet RISE requirements for undergraduate students. Participating in experiential projects is one of the criteria to meet the RISE requirement. Peter integrated experiential consulting projects with regional companies into the Enterprise Risk Management course. The projects ranged from assessing internal supply chain risks for a company to developing risk management recommendations that address political risks faced by an international company.

One of his students commented, “I can easily say that Professor Peter has been the most organized, passionate, and committed professor that I have had during my entire college career.” Another stated, “What makes him stand out from other excellent educators is his commitment to educating his students, regardless of the additional time or effort required from him.”

Peter has also received recognition for his research. In 2020, he received the Early Career Research Award from the Tippie College and the Early Career Scholarly Achievement Award from the American Risk and Insurance Association In addition, he is dedicated to creating an environment where everyone feels like they belong and are valued. As one of the advisors to the student organization Reaching Out in Business, Peter works to promote an inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ students within the college. In 2019, Peter was awarded the Tippie College’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award.

Richard Peter joined the Tippie College in 2015 as an assistant professor and was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2020. He has a diploma in mathematics, an MA in Business Research, and a PhD in Finance all from Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich, Germany. He is a member of the European Group of Risk and Insurance Economists, the Risk Theory Society, and the American Risk and Insurance Association.
