Construction on the University of Iowa’s iconic Old Capitol building has become a normal sight for students, faculty and locals throughout this academic year. However, the purpose behind the project has been under speculation and many people are wondering as to what is being done.
It has now been publicly revealed that along with the repairs to the roof, bell tower, and cupola, a revenue-generating aspect will be incorporated to the structure. Billboards will be placed facing Clinton Street and Madison Street, on the two main sides of the Old Capitol building, directly under the gold dome. These advertising spaces will go on sale publicly within the next month and there is already much interest in the unique marketing opportunity.
The project will be completed by the approaching May graduation, making the class of 2017 the first to have the new billboards appear behind them in their infamous graduating photos in front of the Old Capitol with their cap and gown.
