On April 12, the Tippie College of Business hosted its fourth annual Business Analytics Case Competition with some of the brightest graduate students in the country coming to Iowa City to solve a real-world business problem.

This year’s case was provided by UnityPoint Health, a West Des Moines-based health care system. Sixteen teams, each comprised of four students, traveled to Iowa City to present their analysis and recommendations to a panel of industry judges.

“It is a great honor to host this competition with so many bright students and respected universities competing,” said David Deyak, assistant dean of the Iowa Full-time MBA and Specialized Masters Programs. The field included teams from the University of Alabama, California Polytechnic State University, Oklahoma State University, University of Cincinnati, University of Minnesota, George Mason University, Missouri State University, UNC-Greensboro, Iowa State University, Carnegie Mellon, Fordham University, UC-Irvine, University of Maryland, University of Illinois, Wake Forest University, and the University of Iowa.

“Our case competition would not have been possible without the generous support of UnityPoint Health and our expert judges,” said Kris Arens, professional director of the Master of Science in Business Analytics Program. In addition to UnityPoint Health, analytical leaders from John Deere, United Airlines, Principal Financial, State Farm, Aarete Consulting, and Phillips served as competition judges to assess the teams. Additional sponsorship was also provided by RNL, Aegon Transamerica, Kum and Go, Interstates, and the Tippie Analytics Cooperative.

One of the highlights of the event was the awards presentation.  As part of the 20th anniversary of the naming of the Tippie College of Business, Henry Tippie was on-hand to present the awards to the winning teams.

“Without a doubt, the presence of Henry Tippie during the awards ceremony was exciting for everyone and made this event even more special for all in attendance,” said Mackenzie DeRoo, associate director of corporate development for Iowa’s graduate business programs.

The winners of the competition are as follows:
