Accounting Ph.D. Student Receives Deloitte & Touche Dissertation Fellowship

Rong Zhao, a Ph.D. student in accounting, has been awarded a $25,000 Deloitte & Touche Dissertation Fellowship. This marks the second year in a row that a Tippie doctoral student has been named a Deloitte Fellow. Last year John McInnis was one of 10 students nationwide to receive the award.

The fellowship provides financial support to outstanding doctoral students in accounting as they complete their course work and dissertations. Ten students nationally were selected to be Deloitte Fellows. Colleges and universities can nominate only one student for the award each year.

Zhao is interested in empirical capital markets research in accounting, such as the role of accounting information in asset pricing and corporate financing decisions.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Peking University in Beijing where she received the Japanese Sanwa Bank Scholarship and Outstanding Freshman Award. Her master’s degree in accounting is from the University of Texas at Dallas.

Before joining the Iowa Ph.D. program, Zhao was a tax accountant for RIA in Dallas, a tax research and software firm and business unit of the Thomson Corporation. In addition, she was a tax accountant for Rubin, Brown, Gornstein, & Co. in St. Louis.
