UI Combines, Relocates Winter Commencement Exercises Dec. 20

A combined University of Iowa undergraduate winter commencement ceremony is planned for the first time in decades Saturday, Dec. 20 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The ceremonies, traditionally held at Hancher Auditorium, were moved because of this year's record flooding. The UI College of Engineering has also moved its ceremony to a new location.

The UI expects to confer about 1,600 degrees during the winter commencement exercises, following the end of the fall academic session.

The schedule of ceremonies is as follows:

—Ceremonies will be held for undergraduates from the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS), Tippie College of Business, College of Nursing, College of Education, and Carver College of Medicine at 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. UI President Sally Mason will confer degrees at this ceremony as well as give the keynote, and UI Provost Wallace Loh will be the emcee. CLAS has 792 degree-seeking candidates, including 89 from the UI College of Education who are obtaining their undergraduate certification in teacher education; Tippie has 319 degree candidates, including 222 business undergraduates and 97 MBAs; the UI College of Nursing has 81 degree candidates; and the UI Carver College of Medicine has 10 undergraduate candidates.

—The School of Management (MBA program) will also host a graduation celebration for its 97 graduates at the Coralville Marriott Hotel and Conference Center at 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19, at 5 p.m.

Seats are not reserved and tickets are not necessary for admission to any of the commencement ceremonies. Doors will open one hour before each ceremony. Because of safety concerns, guests will not be allowed to take in large bags or backpacks. Also, security officials reserve the right to inspect purses or camera bags.

UITV will present a live broadcast of most commencement ceremonies, except for the College of Law and MBA program, on local cable TV. UITV will also have a live web stream of the ceremonies, which will be archived on the web for on-demand playback.
