When John Hall (MBA66) launched Goose Island Brewing Company in 1988, he chose to support a local nonprofit, Erie Neighborhood House, during the brewery’s opening-day party. John ended up serving on their board for 30 years, and during those three decades of service, he developed a passion for supporting education—especially for first-generation college students.

“Education is the most important thing in the world,” says Hall. “It gives you self-confidence and helps you be successful in the fast-changing world we live in.”

That’s why he and his wife, Patricia, established a scholarship for students who attended the Tippie Gateway Program. Since 2015, the Tippie Gateway Program has invited high school juniors from backgrounds underrepresented in business to campus for a week to see what it’s like to be a business student. The experience encourages students to consider the possibilities of an Iowa education, and scholarships such as the one given by the Halls put those dreams within reach.

“I received a good education, a good foundation at Iowa,” says Hall.
