Dan Collins (BBA68/PhD73) has been a fixture in the University of Iowa Department of Accounting for more than four decades. Kay Rath Hegarty (BBA80) has always had great admiration for one of the program’s most familiar faces.

“Dan has always been my idol,” says Hegarty, who worked for 35 years at RSM McGladrey and is a Tippie Department of Accounting faculty member. “He left such a lasting impression on my life.”

Hegarty and her husband, John Hegarty, Jr. (BA79), are honoring Collins through the creation of the Kay and John Hegarty Accounting Faculty Excellence Fund, which provides funding to faculty for their most pressing needs. Because of their giving, the Hegartys, of Swisher, Iowa, are now members of the Tippie Society, which recognizes the college’s most generous donors.

“Kay and I both came from families that taught us that education is the answer—it’s the silver bullet,” says John. “The whole idea of education is so incredibly important to both of us.”
