We are over 4,500 students, in programs spanning bachelor’s to PhD. We are six academic departments—accounting, business analytics, economics, finance, management and entrepreneurship, and marketing—and eight centers and institutes

We hold the gold standard of accreditations, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), and have maintained the accreditation for more than 90 years.

Get to know our academic departments

Join an internationally recognized Accounting department that leads in accounting research, pedagogy, and student outcomes. Named one of the Top 25 public undergraduate accounting programs by U.S. News & World Report, the department boasts the highest CPA pass rate in the state of Iowa and a first-time pass rate that ranks in the top 10% nationally. With PhD alumni teaching around the world, a 100% employment rate for MAc graduates, and faculty who have received eight AAA Outstanding Educator awards to date, the Accounting department at Tippie College of Business is an academic leader with a global reach. 

Business analytics is the transformation of data into insights that help businesses make better decisions. Because analytics involves multi-disciplinary processes, it falls at the intersection of computer science, engineering, statistics, mathematics (particularly optimization), and business. The Department of Business Analytics in the Tippie College of Business has been at the forefront of research in analytics since the beginning. Our strengths lie in predictive analysis for health care, social issues, social media, and text. Business analytics faculty have developed key methodologies in social network analysis and continuous optimization. We’re also internationally known for work in supply chain design and transportation, including humanitarian logistics and last-mile delivery. 

The Department of Business Analytics offers a BBA in Business Analytics and Information Systems, a part-time and full-time MS in Business Analytics, and a PhD program. We are actively engaged with internationally-recognized companies and continuing to improve the learning experience for our students. Our work with companies is coordinated through the Tippie Analytics Cooperative, and we host an annual Analytics Case Competition and Women in Analytics and Leadership Conference (WALC). 

Whether teaching undergraduates to think analytically and critically about how individuals, businesses, and governments make choices or conducting cutting-edge econometric research, the Tippie Department of Economics is a leader in the field. 

Our faculty includes a roster of tenure-track professors, experienced lecturers, and adjunct faculty from the corporate sector. Department research is highly regarded and frequently cited in journals and publications. Popular lectures and seminars include the Clarence Tow Lectures and the Davies-deBoer Seminar in Health Economics

In addition to a PhD program, the Department of Economics offers an undergraduate (BBA) major as well as coursework for a BA and BS in economics

Join an internationally recognized Finance department with a reputation for outstanding research, pedagogy, and student outcomes. Our strong group of senior faculty and weekly seminars offer a supportive research environment especially for incoming junior faculty. Our faculty have wide-ranging expertise in all major areas of finance, including asset pricing, corporate finance, and risk management and insurance. Our teaching support is also exemplary with a dedicated program for new faculty and a center for teaching available to help all Iowa faculty. 

We set our students to succeed in multiple ways. Three student-run investment funds and experiential consulting projects for regional companies teach students analytical and communication skills that employers crave. Our culture of friendly feedback and support allows our PhD students to thrive and increases faculty research productivity. The department offers an undergraduate major in finance, a Master of Finance, and a Certificate in Risk Management and Insurance through the Vaughan Institute, which has been designated by the International Insurance Society as a Global Center of Insurance Excellence

The Department of Management and Entrepreneurship at Tippie dives into the complex issues of management—from the behaviors of successful leaders to effective work teams and organizations. They bring this expertise into the classroom and our students benefit from their research and knowledge.

In addition to a PhD program, the department offers an undergraduate major in Business Analytics and Information Systems with three tracks, and contributes extensively to Tippie’s MBA programs. 

From the benefits of joining a new health club to encouraging mutual fund managers to invest in your company—at every level, marketing helps businesses succeed. The Tippie College of Business’s Department of Marketing includes expert faculty who conduct cutting-edge research (think measuring your brain’s decision making via an MRI machine) as well as industry experts who are stars in the classroom.  

In addition to a PhD program, the Department of Marketing provides an undergraduate Marketing major with four tracks.
