Your path to Tippie starts here

Current University of Iowa students and those transferring from another college or university are encouraged to consider the Tippie College of Business. Here you can explore the world of business, diversify your skills with a second major, or prepare for more than one career.

Your advisor will help you decide on your major, plan for future semesters, fill you in on Tippie RISE requirements, and find community through student organizations. We'll also guide you through any challenges or roadblocks that may affect your admission.

Pathways to Tippie’s BBA Program

Pre-Business and Economics BA/BS Path: I know Tippie is where I want to be.

  • Combine your studies to meet admission requirements for our BBA program while exploring different majors within our business core classes.
    • Guidance: You’ll work with a Tippie advisor to navigate your progress toward admission to our BBA program, take advantage of support resources, and explore opportunities within our college.
    • Even if you don’t meet the admission requirements for our BBA, a BA or BS in Economics is the foundation you need to launch into any business career.

Pre-Business Path: I’m still unsure.

  • Exploration: If you're still deciding if Tippie is the right fit, a Pre-Business advisor can help you explore all of Iowa’s different programs of study to make sure it’s the right fit for YOU.
  • Action: Visit the AAC’s front desk to add Pre-Business as a program of study.

Requirements for Admission to Tippie's BBA Program

  • 24 semester hours of college credit (from UI or transfer credit)
  • No instances of academic misconduct
  • Prerequisite, UI, and cumulative GPAs of at least 2.75
  • Passing grades (including grades of P if earned spring 2020) in the following prerequisites or equivalents:
    • ECON:1100 Principles of Microeconomics
    • STAT:1030 Statistics for Business
    • RHET:1030 Rhetoric
    • BAIS:1500 Business Computing Essentials
    • MATH:1350 Quantitative Reasoning for Business
  • Completion of our Pre-Admission Requirement (PAR) form.

How to apply to BBA program – Standard Admission

Most University of Iowa students interested in the BBA program apply around the start of their second year.

After the deadline, you'll complete a Pre-Admission Requirement (PAR) form where you'll answer a series of questions related to admission to the BBA program, planning toward a major in Tippie, and creating a MyPlan that you will use in our Discover Business at Tippie course. 

You need to meet the admissions requirements by the end of the semester in which you apply. 

Fall admissions

Step 1: Check that you have met or are in progress with all requirements required for admission. 

Step 2: Apply before March 1 by filling out the Change of College Application. 

  • Applications can be submitted until midnight on the day of the deadline, but we recommend you apply well before that so we can assist you with questions or problems.

Step 3: After the application deadline, March 1, Tippie's Undergraduate Admissions office will send a link to our Pre-Admission Requirement (PAR) form. 

  • Failure to complete this form before Monday, April 7th will result in students not receiving permission(s) for restricted course(s) - BUS:2200, BUS:3000, and major level courses- until Monday, April 28th.

Step 4: Official transcripts from other institutions must be in the Office of Admissions by June 15 for fall applicants.

Step 5: Keep an eye out for a decision in June.

Step 4: Official transcripts from other institutions must be in the Office of Admissions by January 10 for spring applicants.

Step 5: Keep an eye out for a decision in late December or early January.

How to apply to Economics BA/BS Program(s)

Apply by filling out the Change of College Application before the semester deadline.

  • Spring admissions: March 1

Did you miss the application deadline? Don't sweat it!

Step 1: Submit a change of college application on MyUI for the semester following your intended admission. For example, if you’re applying for Spring 2026 please choose Fall 2026 on your Change of College Application.  

Step 2: Complete our Late Admission Form, after your request is received, a member of our admissions team will contact UI admissions to move your application to your intended admission date.

Pathways to Tippie’s Economics BA or BS program

Declare a major in Economics BA:

  • Advisor Support: Work with a Tippie advisor to ignite your passion for building a broad skillset applicable to various fields and careers.

Declare a major in Economics BS:

  • Advisor Support: Similar to the BA, work with a Tippie advisor to develop a broad skillset for diverse career opportunities.

How to transfer courses

Transfer guides for all Iowa and some Illinois community colleges can help you identify which courses will satisfy some of Tippie’s common courses, including admission requirements for the BBA program.

If you earned an AA degree from any Iowa or Illinois community college or Waldorf College, you’ll have met all the Iowa Core Requirements except world language and the Understanding Cultural Perspectives requirement (effective for anyone admitted to Iowa and Tippie Fall 2021 and after).

What's the Pre-Admission Requirement form?

As a part of your application to the BBA program in the Tippie College of Business, you are required to complete the Pre-Admission Requirement (PAR) form. You will be led through a PAR ICON site reviewing our admission requirements, major interests, Pre-Admission Requirement form link and creating a MyPlan for our Discover Business in Tippie course.

Requests for special permission for restricted courses

  • BUS:2200, BUS:3000, and major-level course permission requests are provided if you're on track for admission to the BBA program and have completed the Pre-Admission Requirement form.

Appeal an admissions decision

If you have applied and been denied admission to Tippie, you can submit an appeal to have the denial decision reviewed.

Submit an appeal for standard admission

Appeals for Spring 2026 admission can be submitted starting December 29th. Appeals must be received before 11:59 pm by January 7th.

To declare a BBA major in Tippie, you must be admitted to the BBA program and have completed the following courses:
