Minimum admissions requirements for PhD candidates

Tippie's PhD programs all share the same minimum requirements as required by the University of Iowa Graduate College. Applicants must have:

  • A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited American college or university, or an equivalent degree from another country as determined by the Office of Admissions.
  • A minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0, or the foreign equivalent as determined by the Office of Admissions.
  • Met or exceeded Graduate College English Proficiency Requirements (international students only).

Admissions requirements by program

Admissions decisions are determined competitively; there are no fixed rules for admissions decisions. Each area of study has specific requirements for its students. See the main program web page for your PhD area of study to see what it requires.

Statement of purpose

Recommended length is 1 to 2 pages.

Three letters of recommendation

The online application includes a feature that will email your recommenders automatically after you enter their contact information. Your recommender will get instructions on uploading the letter.

Academic transcripts

Test scores

Which test to take depends on which program you're applying to. Accounting requires the GMAT. Economics requires the GRE. The remaining four PhD programs (Finance, Management & Entrepreneurship, Business Analytics, and Marketing) require either the GMAT or the GRE. When you request your scores, use the appropriate institution code. Our GMAT program code is 4RL-2J-92. Our GRE code is 6681.

English proficiency

This applies only to international applicants whose native language is not English. We follow the Graduate College's English proficiency requirements

We're small, and we're selective.

That means our PhDs get meaningful experience teaching undergraduate classes and working with faculty on research projects. Learn more about who applies and who gets in to our PhD programs.
