Samuel Burer, professor of business analytics in the Tippie College of Business, along with Renato D.C. Monteiro, received the 2020 INFORMS Computing Society (ICS) prize for their pioneering work on low-rank semi-definite programming.

INFORMS is the leading international association for professionals in operations research and analytics. Within INFORMS, the ICS awards one prize a year for the best English-language paper (or group of related papers) dealing with the operations research/computer science interface. The prize is accompanied by a certificate and a $1,000 honorarium.

Burer began teaching at the college 2001 and is now the George Daly Professor in the Department of Business Analytics. He has a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from the University of Georgia, and a Ph.D. in algorithms, combinatorics, and optimization from Georgia Institute of Technology. His research areas of interest include mathematical optimization and operations research. Previous awards he has received include the Best Paper Award from Computational Optimization and Applications (2009) and the INFORMS Optimization Prize for Young Researchers (2002).
