To be seriously considered for admission, we recommend a GMAT total score of 550 or higher, with a verbal score at the 50th percentile or above. GRE cannot be substituted. An official score report is needed for us to give an admissions decision. Our program code is 4RL-2J-38. The GMAT is not required for University of Iowa undergraduate accounting majors.

If you’re not a native English speaker, we’ll need a TOEFL or IELTS score to show your language skills. Minimum scores are 100 iBT, 600 CBT, and 7.0 IELTS (no subscore <6.0). We need an official score report to give an admissions decision. The University of Iowa institution code is 6681. If you submit an IELTS score, you'll be required to take the on-campus English Proficiency Evaluation (EPE).

The online application

Fill out the Graduate College application. In Section B, choose ACCOUNTING as your Department or Program and MAc as the Degree. In this same section, when it asks for Area of Interest or Specialization, enter one of these:

  • Financial/audit
  • Business analytics
  • Managerial accounting
  • Tax
  • Undecided

The application fee is $60 for domestic candidates and U.S. permanent resident, and $100 for international applicants.

Supplemental documents

After submitting your application, you’ll get an email with instructions on uploading your supporting documents and letters of recommendation through your Admissions Profile in MyUI, our online service center for applicants and students. You can only access MyUI after you have submitted your application. The documents you'll upload are detailed below.

Upload documents in MyUI

Your resume should be a maximum of two pages, and in PDF or DOC/DOCX format.

Statement of purpose
Tell us in one page or less: Why are you interested in pursuing a Master of Accountancy?

Unofficial transcripts
Unofficial transcripts or copies are enough for us to make an admissions decision. If you're admitted, you should quickly request unofficial copies to be sent to Graduate Admissions, so your admission can be finalized. University of Iowa undergraduates can skip this step; we already have your academic records.

We require three letters of recommendation, ideally from former or current employers or instructors. Undergraduate accounting majors at the University of Iowa do not need to provide recommendations.

MyUI includes a Letter of Recommendation feature. You’ll be asked for contact information/email addresses for your recommenders, who will get an email with instructions on how to upload the recommendation letter.

Getting your admissions decision

The Admissions Committee reviews complete applications on five dates: October 1, December 1, March 1, April 15, and July 15. Allow a couple weeks for your decision to appear in MyUI. Click on Admissions Profile to find your decision.

Applying for scholarships

After you're admitted, you can apply for MAC scholarships. Scholarships are not available for MAc students who are selected for a teaching assistantship.
