Kurt F. Heiar

Associate Professor of Practice

Introduction

Kurt is Associate Professor of Practice teaching in the P-MBA and senior undergrad disciplines. He is also the Director of the NSF iCorps and Faculty/Graduate Student Incubator Programs, which he developed for UI and leads across campus entities. This involves overseeing and teaching in the JPEC training program for faculty and graduate students who wish to learn more about commercializing ideas. Kurt also developed the statewide Tippie Venture School Program, a high profile community-based training effort which to date has helped over 800 Iowa entrepreneurs. Kurt received his NSF Medical Certification in 2023 and is now a core instructor for the Big Ten Regional Hub, (University of Michigan-based) representing UI in teaching cohorts of graduate students and faculty from multi-Big Ten universities. Kurt also teaches in the International Program, having done both Italy and Hong Kong assignments with top tier reviews. Kurt teaches courses on Strategic Management of Technology, Advanced Business Planning, and Entrepreneurship & Innovation among others. Kurt's expertise from C-suite and VP-level positions and academic roles gives him high level strategic planning, pragmatic application of academic content, and communication skills in matrix environments. Kurt is well versed in virtual classroom settings, has co-instructed a year-long course with UI Engineering, Law, and Medical faculty, has mentored close to 300 global and student companies personally, and understands medical, pharmaceutical, device and technology businesses. Kurt also serves on various JPEC initiatives, and is asked to conduct personal all-day seminars for the Colleges of Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Carver College of Medicine. As a serial entrepreneur, has been CEO of five start-ups to date, in life sciences, business, and adjunctive artificial intelligence in partnership with John Pappajohn. At Baxter Healthcare Corporation, Kurt was also a former Vice President for Biotech North America, Global Director of Business Development, and Group Marketing executive with product responsibilities for Japan, Western Europe. Kurt's expertise includes building top tier teams, creating business-driven planning, marketing, investors and international business programs. He developed and chaired, at the request of the Iowa Business Council, their Entrepreneurship Committee for four years and regularly serves on the Iowa Economic Development Authority's Venture Net funding panel. Kurt has spent a portion of six of the last nine summers in Greece, (pre-Covid) co-sponsored by THI of New York City and the U.S. Embassy, working with companies, teaching entrepreneurship, delivering keynote addresses, and co-developing the Greece Venture Capital Fair as part of the economic recovery effort across the country. Kurt also is asked to regularly serve as a guest speaker by his UI colleagues, at conferences, and Iowa business/community organizations.
