Community involvement, volunteerism, and service projects

Community involvement and service projects are a natural extension of the sense of ownership we feel toward our community. We put the power of business education to work to help low-income communities, local businesses, and nonprofit organizations in Iowa City and the broader Johnson County.

Tippie Build

Tippie Build embodies the spirit of volunteerism at the college. What started as the largest community service project in the history of the college in 2006 became a tradition that brings students, staff, and faculty together to improve our community. To date, Tippie students have raised more than $400,000 for Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity and provided most of the volunteer labor to build eight Habitat homes. Every academic year, we begin a new Tippie Build and work to raise $50,000 and build a home for a local family in need of safe and affordable housing. We accomplish this through a partnership with the Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

Each year, the college's Beta Alpha Psi chapter offers a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program to help low- and moderate-income taxpayers in the Johnson County area prepare and file their taxes. We are part of the Johnson County Earned Income Tax Outreach Campaign, a project devoted to supporting the financial security of working families in Johnson County by offering free tax preparation services. Taxpayers using VITA volunteers to help file their taxes don’t pay to have their returns prepared, and they don’t pay to get their refunds.

Student consulting projects

Tippie students at all levels take part in experiential projects where they apply classroom learning to solve real-world business problems. It is a fundamental part of the Tippie experience and in a large number of cases, the businesses our students support are local businesses or nonprofits from around the region. From developing a marketing plan for a local nonprofit to building predictive algorithms for charitable giving, Tippie students put the power of business to work for our community. Let us know if you or your organization would like Tippie students to tackle your next challenge.

Student organizations

Tippie is home to over 20 student-run organizations, most of which have volunteerism as part of their core mission. Student organizations raise money, support area businesses, and are actively involved in community service projects.

Tippie Students for Service

Tippie Students for Service (TSS) work to help solve social issues that are prevalent in the Iowa City community. TSS focuses on several social causes and members are encouraged to start their own projects that work to solve a piece of the overlying issues. TSS promotes hard work, creativity, and the desire to do good for others.
