Kang Zhao, Leonard A. Hadley professor of business analytics and department executive officer, has been named the new associate dean of the Tippie College of Business.

“Kang has demonstrated thoughtful, strategic leadership in the Analytics department,” said Amy Kristof-Brown, dean of the Tippie College of Business. “His professionalism, use of data for decision making, and an ability to effectively balance the needs of the college, the department, students, and employers make him well suited to serve in this important role.”
Zhao has been a member of the Tippie faculty since 2012. His current research focuses on data science, especially data mining, predictive modeling, and simulation of social and business interactions. He has published more than 50 journal papers, with several research projects supported by NIH and NSF. His research has been featured in public media from more than 25 countries. He served as chair for the INFORMS Artificial Intelligence College, co-chair for the INFORMS Data Science Workshop, and as an editor for numerous journals.
He earned his Ph.D. from Penn State University and also has degrees from the Beijing Institute of Technology and Eastern Michigan University.
Zhao replaces Barrett Thomas, who will become associate dean of faculty in the University of Iowa’s Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost.
