The Tippie College of Business has unveiled a new ranking of academic business analytics departments based on publications in journals and other outlets by each department’s faculty, with MIT’s Sloan School of Management topping the inaugural list.

Nick Street, Tippie’s associate dean for research, said the Iowa Business Analytics Ranking differs from other business analytics rankings in that the new list of journals and conference presentations is broader and more tailored towards analytics.

“We think this better represents the wide range of research that goes on in business analytics departments, including such disciplines as information science, mathematics, and statistics,” Street said. “We think it offers a holistic assessment of the current state of business analytics research and provides a valuable resource for scholars, educators, practitioners, and students navigating this dynamic and interdisciplinary domain.”

He said he hopes the new ranking also shapes the future direction of business analytics research which helps to address complex business challenges.

The methodology for the ranking is based on a number of collegiate memberships and business school research and education rankings. The departments in each business school that most closely matched the college’s own definition of "business analytics" were identified, along with tenured and tenure-track faculty in each of those departments. They then ran an analysis that measured those faculty members’ scholarly productivity between 2020 and 2024.

The top 10 business analytics departments in the initial ranking, based on the number of A-list journal or conference publications per faculty member, are:

  1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  2. University of California Los Angeles
  3. University of Arizona
  4. University of Chicago
  5. Temple University
  6. Duke University
  7. University of Florida
  8. University of Washington
  9. Columbia University
  10. University of Texas at Dallas

Tippie’s own department of business analytics is ranked 15.
