2017 theme: “Writing Your Life Story”
Newly minted PhD students, while well-trained in research methods and other aspects of academic endeavors, still face considerable challenges crafting and managing their careers. These struggles come to life through tenure failures, mobility in mid-career, and more. Large group sessions cover practical topics like getting your first job, managing your early career, and advice from our journal editors. Small group discussions will focus on research topics and methods.
The consortium is a way for fellows to meet and interact with faculty in an informal setting. But beyond that, we hope fellows will get to know faculty personally, rather than from a distance through their papers and presentations. We're planning a series of social events and group discussions to maximize these interactions.
Our plenary and breakout sessions will emphasize writing. The University of Iowa's Writer's Workshop is the foremost writing program in the world, turning out a veritable who’s who of writers, including John Irving and Flannery O'Connor. We draw on this resource for our sessions.
We would like to welcome you to the 52nd Annual AMA-Sheth Foundation Doctoral Consortium. The consortium is designed to provide a forum that brings together prominent scholars of today and talented young scholars of tomorrow.
The consortium starts on Wednesday, June 14, 2017, beginning at 4:30 pm CST at the Sheraton Hotel in Iowa City. Events continue all day on Thursday, June 15 and Friday, June 16 and the morning on Saturday, June 17, 2017.

Welcome to the AMA –Sheth Foundation Doctoral Consortium!
The Tippie College of Business is honored to host this year’s consortium. As a marketing faculty member, I know how beneficial this event is for both PhD students and faculty. I personally attended this event when I was a PhD student and still recall the impact it made on my career development. We hope you take advantage of the opportunities this conference provides to meet your peers, network with others from different institutions, and broaden your professional community.
The consortium provides a forum for idea sharing—doctoral students will learn from the best in the field and participants will be sparked by new thought in the academy. Old friendships will be rekindled and new friendships developed as we spend several days together.
Through this year’s theme of “Writing Your Life’s Story,” we will be emphasizing the demand for and challenges of writing in our professional work. The University of Iowa’s Writing Program is widely respected and revered. The Tippie College utilizes writing tutors from the program in our Business Communication Center and our hope is to utilize this expertise in our conference as well.
While in Iowa, I encourage you to take advantage of our location—enjoy the pedestrian mall, the beautiful setting, and the friendly people. And while you’re at it, take a look at our internationally-ranked programs and offerings. As the world of business has evolved, so has the Tippie College and I’m proud of all the college has accomplished.

About the AMA–Sheth Foundation Doctoral Consortium
The Department of Marketing at the University of Iowa's Tippie College of Business is pleased to be hosting the 2017 AMA-Sheth Foundation Doctoral Consortium in Iowa City, Iowa. Now in its 52nd year, the 2017 Consortium will bring together talented doctoral candidates and the world’s most distinguished marketing faculty to explore the frontiers of marketing thought.
The invitation-only consortium offers presentations, workshops and networking events that encourage interaction and dialogue among renowned faculty and consortium doctoral fellows. In 1997 the name was changed to the AMA-Sheth Doctoral Consortium in recognition of the Madhuri & Jagdish N. Sheth Foundation’s commitment to finance part of the Consortium on an ongoing basis with the establishment of an AMA Foundation endowed fund. This year marks the first time this event has been hosted by the University of Iowa. Download a list of past hosts here.
Attendance at the 52nd AMA–Sheth Foundation Doctoral Consortium is by invitation only. Invitations were sent in October 2016. To register and submit your program information, please refer to the instructions in the personal invitation you received via email.
