The award-winning Department of Business Analytics at the University of Iowa’s Tippie College of Business has been recognized as one of the best undergraduate analytics departments in the country by U.S. News & World Report.

The department’s Business Analytics and Information Systems (BAIS) major was ranked 33 among undergraduate business analytics programs and 16 among public programs in the magazine’s 2022 ranking of national colleges and universities, published Sept. 13, 2021. It’s the first time the department has been ranked.

This is the second such significant honor for the department this year. In April, 2021 it received the UPS George D. Smith Prize, which recognizes the leading university in the world for excellence in preparing students to practice in the areas of analytics or operations research.

Ann Campbell, business analytics department executive officer, says the honors recognize the college’s hard work to fill a need by American businesses that are continually increasing their analytics operations as they seek new and innovative ways to use data to improve efficiency.

The department’s success is also reflected in undergraduate enrollment growth, which went from 100 students in 2013-14 to nearly 500 in 2019-20. Even in the 2020-21 academic year, when higher education enrollment decreased across the board due to COVID-19 limitations, enrollment was still nearly 400 students.

This is only the second time U.S. News has ranked business analytics departments, having introduced the category in its 2021 ranking.

In other U.S. News rankings, Tippie maintained its position as one of the top 25 public business colleges in the country, ranking at 24. Among all public and private schools, it ranks 36. In addition, the college’s Department of Accounting was ranked among the top 50.
