GMAT prep resources
The GMAT has four sections: analytical writing, integrated reasoning, quantitative, and verbal. Only quant and verbal are factored into your total score. We polled our students and alumni and gathered their recommendations to create this list of free and paid resources to prepare for the GMAT.
GMAT and GRE scores are not required to apply to the Iowa MBA, nor at any point during the program.

Preparing for the GMAT or GRE
Standardized tests may seem intimidating, but there are ways to improve your performance: understand the format, practice sample test questions, and review one section at a time. We recommend studying for at least six weeks before taking the test.
Free resources
- MBA.com—A practice exam is available for free with registration on MBA.com. A great diagnostic tool to help you discover which areas of the exam to focus on.
- Khan Academy—Nearly 100 videos help you work through math and data sufficiency questions using clear, step-by-step instructions.
Paid resources
- MBA.com—All-in-one prep books with more than 900 questions from past GMAT exams, online courses, a question bank, and more. Get The Official Guide for GMAT Review here, plus workbooks focused on just verbal or quant.
- Veritas Prep—In-person and live online classes. Registration includes practice tests to tell you where to focus your study time and lesson videos.
- The Princeton Review—Everything from private tutoring and group courses to a self-prep kit with online drills and a complete set of study materials.
- Kaplan—Test prep including online courses, live center-based courses, private tutoring, and study guides.
GRE prep resources
The GRE has three sections: quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning and analytical writing. Each is scored separately. The test allows you to skip questions, change answers, and gives more control over which questions to answer first.

- ETS—Software with two full-length, timed practice tests, a 100-page math review, general tips, and sample questions.
- Khan Academy—Free prep videos for the GRE’s quant section.
Paid resources
- ETS—Including The Official Guide to the GRE book (also on Amazon) and the Official GRE Guide mobile app.
- The Princeton Review—A large variety of learning options, including self-directed and one-one-one tutoring, are available.
