The Tippie College of Business Social Impact Community and the School of Planning and Public Affairs are hosting a two-part workshop that brings together researchers and professionals with interest in 15-minute cities.

from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm in S401 Pappajohn Business Building (PBB)

15-minute cities enable residents to access most daily amenities within a 15-minute walk or bicycle ride. 15-minute cities are an increasingly popular concept to enhance sustainability and well-being. However, 15-minute cities require coordination of land use policies, transportation systems, pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, economic development, equitable access, and social infrastructure.

The objectives of the 15-minute cities workshop include:

  • Identify key challenges and unanswered questions regarding 15-minute cities
  • Connect researchers from multiple disciplines with expertise related to 15-minute cities (e.g., urban planning, transportation, analytics, economic development, engineering, health and well-being, social justice and equity, law)
  • Create interdisciplinary working groups to collaborate on research projects or grant opportunities related to 15-minute cities

Potential Grant Opportunities

  • NSF Smart & Connected Communities – April 1, 2024
    Supports use-inspired research that addresses communities' social, economic and environmental challenges. Projects must work with community stakeholders on pilots that integrate intelligent technologies with the natural and built environments.
  • NSF Civil Infrastructure Systems (CIS) - Full proposal accepted anytime.
    The Civil Infrastructure Systems (CIS) program supports fundamental and innovative research in the design, operation and management of civil infrastructure that contributes to creating smart, sustainable and resilient communities at local, national and international scales. This program focuses on civil infrastructure as a system in which interactions between spatially- and functionally- distributed components and intersystem connections exist. All critical civil infrastructure systems are of interest, including transportation, power, water, pipelines and others.
  • Bourchard Foundation Center on Law and Aging – October 15, 2024
    The Borchard Foundation Center on Law & Aging underwrites an Academic Research Grant Program to further scholarship about new or improved public policies, laws and/or programs that will enhance the quality of life for older adults (4 grants of $20,000 each). Each grant recipient is required to publish a scholarly article on their research in an academic journal. Applicants are encouraged to disseminate research findings through additional channels such as conferences, stakeholder meetings, and white papers.

About Part 2

The second part of the workshop will take place in late February and early March.

Researchers interested in specific research questions that were generated in the first part of the workshop will meet virtually at scheduled times.

The objective of these sessions will be to further develop specific research ideas with interdisciplinary teams.
