Program overview

You can read all the college brochures in the world, but there is nothing like spending a week on a college campus to give you a sense of your future community. The Gateway Summer Program does exactly that. We bring high school juniors from underrepresented backgrounds to campus during the summer before their senior year (typically late June) to get a glimpse into life as a college student. The program is free—including lodging, meals, and activities—thanks to generous donations from our program sponsors. Your only expense will be travel costs to and from the program.

During the program, you’ll learn about aspects of business and participate in business simulations and case studies. You'll also work with faculty, staff, and business professionals as you begin to hone your business skills. Participate in cultural and recreational activities while you explore the university and Iowa City.

Participation is by application only, and preference is given to qualified applicants from populations underrepresented in business, including underrepresented minority, low-income, women, and/or first-generation college students.

Application considerations

  • We will review applications in early May.
  • The essay portion of the application will be a key factor in the selection process.
  • More qualified students will have a 3.0 GPA or higher.

The application for the Summer 2021 program will close on May 10, 2021.

What to expect

Program coordinators

Staff and faculty at the Tippie College of Business facilitate the program, which is coordinated by Gabriela Rivera and Mark Archibald from the Undergraduate Program Office. The program also hires and trains college students to lead small groups throughout the week and serve as mentors. Gateway Summer Program participants will be supervised in all scheduled virtual rooms.

After the program

We will stay in contact with you through your senior year of high school—through the application process, financial aid, and scholarship applications—and will be there to answer questions as you make your final college decisions. Once you're accepted to the University of Iowa, a whole host of programs will be available to you, including Iowa Edge.
