Henry Tippie, the Belle Plaine farm boy who went on to become a major benefactor to the University of Iowa and namesake of its business school, died Sunday at age 95.

Whenever Henry B. Tippie made a donation to the University of Iowa, he called it a "small down payment for benefits received."
"He was so appreciate of the doors that were opened to him by getting an accounting degree (at Iowa)," Dan Collins said, research professor for accounting in the Tippie College of Business.

A Belle Plaine, Iowa native, Henry Tippie grew up milking cows on the family farm, attended a one-room rural schoolhouse and made it to the university using the G.I. Bill after serving in World War II. He ended up excelling academically, graduating earlier than expected in 1949 — missing only one class, because he was sick and overslept — and building a successful business career on Wall Street.
